Natural ways to reduce estrogen dominance

In our community, we talk a lot about hormonal balance, but what does that actually look like at the cellular level?

If you are dealing with heavy cycles, mood swings, or stubborn weight gain, you might be experiencing estrogen dominance.

To help tackle this, we can use a two-step process to clear excess estrogen using cruciferous veggies and glucaric acid.

Step 1: The Breakdown with the Cruciferous

Our liver is basically a recycling center. Before estrogen can leave your body, it has to be processed.

When you eat cruciferous vegetables (collards, kale, cabbage, broccoli), your body creates a compound called DIM (Diindolylmethane).

  • DIM pushes your liver to metabolize estrogen down the "2-hydroxy" pathway (the protective, "good" pathway) instead of the pathways that cause inflammation.

  • To activate the enzymes, chop your greens and let them sit for about 10 minutes before you hit the heat. This prep and rest method ensures you get the maximum hormonal benefit.

Step 2: The Exit Strategy (Enter Glucaric Acid)

Processing estrogen in the liver is only half the battle. Once it’s processed, it’s sent to the gut to be flushed out.

This is where Glucaric Acid (Calcium D-Glucarate) comes in. There is an enzyme in the gut called beta-glucuronidase that acts like a pair of scissors. It tries to cut open the estrogen so it can be reabsorbed into your blood. Glucaric acid blunts or stops those scissors.

  • The goal is to keep the estrogen packaged up so it actually leaves your body in your stool.

  • Top Souliterranean Food Sources:

    • Apples and Pears: Perfect for a quick snack.

    • Citrus: Start your morning with lemon or grapefruit.

    • Legumes: Black-eyed peas and lentils are high in fiber, which helps the "sweep" move faster.

Soul Foods that Can Help

To get the most out of sweeping the estrogen out, we want to pair these nutrients with our traditional staples.

  • Sautéed collard greens (cruciferous/DIM) paired with black-eyed peas (fiber/glucaric acid) and a squeeze of fresh lime (citrus/glucaric acid).

The Bottom Line: You can’t just detox with a tea. Real hormonal health happens when you give your liver the tools to process and your gut the tools to eliminate.

Give thanks,

Mary
