Essential Hypertension

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, means the force of blood against your artery walls is too strong for too long. Over time, this can strain your heart and damage blood vessels, increasing the risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.

It’s often called the “silent killer” because it usually has no symptoms, but it can cause issues in the background if left untreated.

Rhythms that Heal

Learning how to build a deep, intentional connection is not just about being around people. It's about the quality of your relationships (horizontal) and your alignment with the Creator (vertical).

When we can feel seen and supported, that shifts our nervous system to remain in a relaxed state, which can also allow our blood vessels to relax and naturally support the lowering of the blood pressure.

Stress often stems from us carrying way too many burdens that we were not meant to hold. When you surrender the ideology that you have to do everything and that you have to carry everything to God, this can literally lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

  • In order to give it over to God, dedicate 10 minutes each morning to silent prayer or scripture meditation. Focus on verses that emphasize peace and provision (e.g., Philippians 4:6-7).

  • Even during the daytime, if you feel a pressure spike or overwhelmed, you can take a moment to stop and breathe, and also recite a short prayer of surrender, so you can shift outside of that panic mode.

  • What you can do:

    • 10-minute morning surrender: Each morning, dedicate 10 minutes to silent prayer or scripture meditation. Focus on verses about peace and provision (example: Philippians 4:6–7).

    • Daytime “pressure spike” reset: If you feel overwhelmed, pause for 60 seconds. Breathe slowly, and pray a short prayer of surrender to step out of panic mode.

Many of us are so disconnected from our physical bodies because we are so busy caring for everybody else and indulging ourselves in everybody else's business. And when that happens, we start to miss the body cues, we start to put ourselves on a back burner, we start to delay our medical care, and all those things.

  • I challenge you to commit to yourself. Perform a body scan twice a day. And take note of where you are holding tension. Is it in your jaw? Is it on your shoulders or your chest?

  • If you find tension, consciously drop your shoulders and take three deep belly breaths. This sends a direct signal to your brain that you are safe.

  • What you can do:

    • Body scan, 2x/day: Scan jaw, shoulders, chest, and belly. Notice where you are holding tension.

    • Drop + breathe: If you find tension, drop your shoulders and take 3 deep belly breaths. This signals safety to the brain.

Depending on what your environment is or if you are in an under-resourced or high-stress environment, the community can either be a source of stress or a source of healing.

  • Make sure you are maintaining your boundaries. But identify one safe person who does not drain your energy. This is someone you can be honest with without feeling judged or shamed.

  • And once you find that person, schedule a 15-minute touch point every week with this person. You can share laughter, and you can vent in a safe space, which will help to reduce your stress hormones.

  • What you can do:

    • Choose one safe person: Identify one person who does not drain your energy, someone you can be honest with without judgment.

    • Weekly touchpoint: Schedule a 15-minute check-in each week (call, voice note, or walk-and-talk). Laughter, prayer, and safe venting can lower stress.

As caregivers and leaders, we often say "yes" at the expense of our health. High blood pressure is often the body’s way of saying, "I’ve had enough."

  • The Practice: Identify one recurring social obligation that leaves you feeling exhausted or resentful.

  • The Action: Practice saying "I don’t have the capacity for that right now" without over-explaining. Protecting your time is a medical necessity for your heart.

    • Protect your peace with:

      • One boundary per week: Choose one boundary that protects your peace (example: “No work texts after 8 pm”), and practice it for 7 days.

      • Stress trigger note: Daily for 7 days, jot down what was happening (sleep, conflict, caffeine, food) when you felt tense or rushed, 1 sentence max.

      • Breath reset: For the next 14 days, do 2 minutes of slow breathing (in 4, out 6) twice daily (morning + evening). Track it with a simple checkbox.

      • Prayer + release: 3 days/week, spend 5 minutes praying, journaling, or speaking one worry out loud, then write one “next right step.”

      • Scripture anchor (vertical): For 14 days, read 1 short passage each morning (or 1 verse). Write one line: “Today I am receiving [peace, courage, wisdom].”

      • Gratitude + body scan (vertical): 5 days/week for 2 weeks, spend 3 minutes noticing your body (jaw, shoulders, belly), then name 3 thanks (even small ones).

      • Breath + name of God (vertical): For 7 days, pair your breathing with a simple phrase, inhale “Prince of Peace,” exhale “steady my heart,” for 2 minutes.

      • Sabbath micro-practice (vertical): Once weekly, take a 30-minute “holy pause” (no errands, no screens), choose one restorative act (walk, worship music, quiet sit, prayer).

      • Support touchpoint: Twice weekly for 4 weeks, call/text one safe person for 10 minutes (or send a voice note) to reduce isolation.

      • BP check-in (if you have a cuff): 4 days/week for 4 weeks, check BP at the same time, seated and rested. Record the reading and how you slept.
