Iron Deficiency Anemia

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a condition where iron is too low to build enough healthy red blood cells. That can lead to fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, brain fog, and feeling like your body can’t catch up.

To understand iron deficiency anemia, think of iron as the oxygen delivery truck for your body.

Your body needs iron to make red blood cells. These cells have one job: they pick up oxygen from your lungs and carry it to your brain, your muscles, and your organs so you have energy to move and think.

When you don’t have enough iron, the delivery trucks stop running. Your body is forced to ration the little oxygen it has left, saving it only for your heart and brain while cutting off the rest of your body.

Rhythms that Heal

Healing requires connection. When you are fighting fatigue, it is hard to do it isolated or disconnected from the world around you.

To rebuild your vitality, you need to establish two types of connection habits: vertical connections (your relationship with God and the Spirit he gives) and horizontal connections (your relationship with your community, family, and daily environment).

Here are simple, daily connection habits you can build into your life right now to support your healing journey.

These habits ground your spirit, calm your nervous system, and lower the stress hormones that block your body from absorbing iron.

  • Morning Grounding (5 Minutes): Sit quietly in prayer, meditation, or deep breathing before looking at your phone. Dedicate your morning to peace rather than starting the day in a rush.

  • The 3-Breath Meal Blessing (1 Minute): Before your first bite of food, close your eyes and take 3 slow, deep belly breaths. This shifts your nervous system into "rest-and-digest" mode so your gut is ready to absorb nutrients.

  • The "Feet on the Earth" Break (5 to 10 Minutes): Step outside during the day. Let your eyes rest on the trees or grass, and take in natural sunlight to lower physical inflammation and reset your internal clock.

  • Unplugged Savoring Windows (15 Minutes): Eat at least one meal a day completely disconnected from work, TV, or social media. Focus entirely on blessing your food and quietly nourishing your body.

  • The "I Am Sustained" Breath Prayer (1 Minute): When mid-day fatigue hits, reset your mind. Inhale slowly while thinking, "I breathe in strength," and exhale slowly while thinking, "I release the grind."

  • Nighttime Release (2 Minutes): Before your head hits the pillow, mentally or verbally hand over the day's burdens, worries, and to-do lists to God or your higher power. Releasing that weight allows your body to enter deep, cellular repair while you sleep.

When you are running on empty, you have to stop trying to do it all alone. Leaning on your village lowers the physical strain on your body, giving your system the breathing room it needs to rebuild your blood and reclaim your energy.

  • The Daily No: Choose one task, favor, or obligation each day that you will gracefully decline or delegate. Protect your empty tank from being drained further.

  • Ask for 15 Minutes: Identify someone in your trusted village and ask them to take over a specific chore or task (like watching the kids, picking up groceries, or handling a phone call) so you can rest.

  • Mealtime Accountability: Connect with a friend, family member, or partner to share an iron-rich meal or swap healthy recipes. Build a culture of health within your circle.

  • Move with Your People: Walk or move gently with a friend, neighbor, or group. Community movement lowers stress and keeps you connected to your support system without overexerting yourself.
