the sun is not enough for vitamin d

Vitamin D is one of those nutrients that I feel most people are sleeping on.

But it is super important for healing and living.

And it just so happens that Black and Brown people are more likely to be deficient in Vitamin D in comparison to lighter or clearer complexion people.

In that instance, we have to be very cognizant about how we replenish our Vitamin D.

And it’s not always going to be as easy as just getting more sun.

Melanin is very protective.

It acts as a natural sunscreen that protects our bodies from harmful sun rays. I believe it has to do with the evolutionary history that when we were traveling by foot, we often would have large exposures to the sun.

So genetically, our body just created more of the pigment to protect us from any dysfunction in relation to sun exposure.

High Melanin was an original factory setting for all of humanity.

If you believe in history, then you would understand that humans may have evolved near the equator in Africa under intense, direct sunlight.

And the most important part about UV rays in regards to vitamins wasn't that it burned the skin...

It was that UV radiation destroyed Folate (Vitamin B9).

Vitamin B9 is super important because:

  • It is critical for how your DNA replicates itself.

  • It is critical for sperm production.

  • It is critical in preventing spinal defects in babies during pregnancy.

So natural selection favored High Melanin because it acted as a natural sunblock (SPF 13 to 15).

It blocked the UV rays from destroying the folate in the blood and ensured that healthy babies were born back in that time.

Dark skin was evolutionary to protect the next generation.

However, if you are a Black or Brown person, your element is doing its job by blocking UV rays.

So in that instance, we are going to need 3 to 5 times more sun exposure (or oral supplementation) in comparison to a lighter skin person just to make the same amount of Vitamin D.

If we don't get enough Vitamin D, here is what can happen:

  • Your immune system gets confused and starts attacking your own body instead of fighting off germs.

  • Your hair follicles go into "hibernation mode," causing shedding and thinning edges that no oil can fix.

  • You catch every cold that goes around, and it takes twice as long for you to shake it.

  • You feel a heavy, unexplainable sadness or anxiety that doesn't match what is actually happening in your life.

  • You walk into a room and instantly forget why you went there because your brain is misfiring.

  • You feel a deep, nagging ache in your hips or shins that feels like "growing pains" even though you are grown.

  • You wake up tired and stay tired all day, even if you got a full eight hours of sleep.

  • Your body struggles to handle sugar properly, leaving you feeling hungry and crashed out right after you eat.

  • Your stomach stays bloated and sensitive because the "seal" on your gut lining is too weak to keep toxins out.

Because our melanin is such a strong natural sunblock, we have to work three times as hard just to get the same amount of Vitamin D as everyone else.

  • Your fibroids may grow faster and bigger because your uterus lacks the "stop growth" signal that Vitamin D provides.

  • Your blood pressure stays stubbornly high because your blood vessels are too stiff and can't relax without Vitamin D.

  • You struggle to lose weight because your fat cells hold onto every calorie when they sense a "nutritional emergency."

  • Your eczema and acne flare-ups are harder to calm down because your skin has lost its natural anti-inflammatory ability.

  • Your monthly cramps are more intense and painful because low Vitamin D increases the inflammation levels in your uterus.

  • You hit a plateau in the gym and can't build muscle because your body struggles to repair the tissue after a workout.

  • Your gums bleed or recede because your jawbone isn't strong enough to hold your teeth firmly in place.

  • You feel "winter blues" or seasonal depression much harder than others because your tank is already empty before the cold season even starts.

  • Your wounds, cuts, or dark spots take forever to heal because your skin cells don't have the energy to turnover quickly.

  • You may have higher blood sugar spikes because your pancreas needs Vitamin D to release insulin properly.

So if you have a Vitamin D level that is not optimized (greater than 50), please prioritize it!

It can be the missing link that you needed to correct your health symptoms.

Give Thanks,

Mary
